Misool Eco resort

Misool Eco Resort is an exclusive dive Misool Eco resortresort and conservation centre located in the southern part of Raja Ampat, Indonesia. The private resort island is nestled deep in a vast archipelago of uninhabited islands, in the heart of marine biodiversity. The island and the scuba dive sites are surrounded by their very own 1220 sq km No-Take Zone. Come inside and see for yourself what scuba diving Indonesia and the worlds' richest reefs is like.
The resort's private island, Batbitim, is fringed with powder-white beaches, protected by stunning clear lagoons and abundant reefs. With just nine guest holiday cottages, Misool Eco Resort is able to offer exclusive luxury diving holidays, surrounded by the world's richest reefs. Click here to see a map of the island.
The holiday cottages are built to European Misool Eco Resortstandards of comfort and safety, artfully blending indigenous natural materials with meticulous detailing. Every single piece of lumber used to build our small haven as has been milled from salvaged driftwood and free-fallen timbers collected in Raja Ampat and the nearby island of Seram.
The eight deluxe Water Cottages rise on stilts over the placid North Lagoon. Each of these spacious cottages features a private veranda on which you'll enjoy gentle tropical breezes and glorious equatorial views. With steps leading down from your veranda, the house reef is just a few fin-kicks away. Each holiday cottage is equipped with air conditioning, a comfortable bed, a mini-bar, a massive veranda with a built in hammock, and a Balinese-style en suite bathroom. Misool Eco Resort
Misool Eco Resort is strongly committed to a policy of environmental responsibility. MER has reached an agreement with our local hosts to create a No-Take Zone. We have leased more than 400 km of sea surrounding Batbitim. This includes many of Raja Ampat's finest dive sites, including the Manta Cleaning Station, Boo, Fiabacet, Gorgonian Passage, and Yillet. Within this area, all fishing, shark finning, harvesting of turtle eggs and shellfish are strictly prohibited. We also require all boats to practice reef-safe anchoring.
The construction and operation of the resort have been meticulously engineered to minimise our environmental impact. In addition to salvaging driftwood and milling our own lumber, we've engineered our buildings with energy efficiency in mind. We've installed waste water gardens to minimise our consumption, and we're experimenting with solar and wind power to augment our generators.
Perhaps most importantly, Misool Eco ResortMER is dedicated to safeguarding the local community in which we operate. Our labour force is drawn largely from Yellu, the closest village. We're proud to offer them favourable working conditions, health benefits, job training, and English lessons. You can read more about our sustainability policy and why we call ourselves an eco-resort.
The Misool Conservation Centre will be located on a small beach on the north side of the Batbitim. A UK-registered non-profit, the Conservation Centre will provide a well-equipped, functional base for scientific research and conservation projects, as well as accommodation for visiting researchers and scientists. It is our aim to facilitate continuing research, with hopes of filling a critical gap in our understanding of this complex and important ecosystem. One of the Conservation Centre's first projects was to assemble a local team to patrol and enforce the No-Take Zone - Article from the New York times about Misool Eco Resort

Indonesia - Raja Ampat

Revel in a magestic array of superbMisool Eco resort Indonesia liveaboard diving natural attractions, unspoiled coral gardens, volcanic landscapes and unexplored turquoise cays. Straddling the equator, Indonesia is a tropical island paradise made up of 14,000 islands, many of which are noted as world-class diving destinations. Misool Eco resort Indonesia liveaboard divingThe stunning natural wealth of this archipelago, even when considering itsindividual attractions, is enough to make most other travel spots green with envy. If you are looking for an idyllic tropical setting with great diving right at your doorstep and unforgettable natural wonders, a trip to Indonesia is a must. Even though there is no way for this website to touch on all that Indonesia has to offer, here is a brief glimpse at some of the highlights
Put simply, Raja Ampat could quite possibly be the best diving in the world. It certainly is the world's most biodiverse marine region with more recorded fish, coral and mollusk species than anywhere else on Earth.Raja Ampat map - Dive sites
According to the Conservation International Rapid Assessment Bulletin the marine life diversity for diving in Irian Jaya is considerably greater than all other areas sampled in the Coral Triangle. The Raja Ampat area is considered home to more than 1,000 fish species, 101 of which were previously unknown in Raja Ampat and four that are new to all of Indonesia. A world record 284 sightings on one single dive was set at Kofiau Island. A benchmark figure for an excellent dive site is 200 fish species sightings, this was surpassed on 51% of Raja Ampat dives! There were 537 coral species and 699 mollusk species - again another world high. The variety of marine life can be staggering. Some areas boast enormous schools of fish and regular sightings of sharks, such as wobbegongs. In Mansuar, you may encounter large groups of manta rays and turtles. From the boat and oftenRaja Ampat diving close to shore you may get the chance to don your snorkeling gear for some unforgettable interaction with resident pods of dolphins or even some passing whales. Other highlights include the innumerable war wrecks, both ships and planes (with new wrecks being discovered constantly). The reefs of Raja Ampat are just as varied as the marine life. There are vertical walls, reef flats, slopes, sea mounts, Raja Ampat divingmucky mangroves, lagoons and pinnacles. The reefs are in pristine condition with miles of perfect hard corals and many varied colorful species of soft corals. The diving is predominantly drift dives due to the moderate prevalent currents in the area which provide nutrients for the myriad fish and coral. Currents are average to moderate and vary from none to very strong. Due to these currents and the number of wrecks,Raja Ampat diving Irian Jaya is not really considered a destination for absolute beginners, rather for divers with a few dives under their belts looking to get away from the crowds. Visibility is normally very good but can vary and is normally at its best earlier in the day so your pre-breakfast dives are not to be slept through!
The pristine beauty of the area, both above and below the water is trulyRaja Ampat diving unrivalled. This success of area's staggering abundance of marine life can also be attributed to the areas incredibly low human population density. Its remote location and lack of infrastructure have inhibited the growth of tourism.
This is truly "Frontier Diving". Topside the beautiful islands stretch as far as you can see and are largely uninhabited. At night the lights of local fishing boats twinkle in the dark along the few inhabited shorelines while in more remote areas you may only see a distant spec of light over the entire horizon. -Raja Ampat photos

Misool Eco resort - Dining

The resort's beach-front restaurant is located on the North Bay, overlooking a shallow turquoise lagoon. The airy, round-roofed structure is tucked back under the trees, offering a perfect respite from the mid-day heat. The restaurant's terrace is the ideal place to enjoy a sunset drink while watching the sharks and long-toms hunt schools of circling sardines.
Misool Eco resort dining
The resort's Hilton and Sheraton-trained chef Simon has created a menu withMisool Eco Resort the discriminating palate in mind. They offer exceptionally tasty, nutritious, and whenever possible, organic fare from local sources. Of course, they also offer international delicacies.
The resort typically offers a simple pre-dive breakfast buffet of fresh fruit, homemade bread, homemade granola, fruit juice, coffee and tea. The second breakfast offers all this as well as free range eggs, beans, pancakes. Lunch is served as a buffet as well. A typical menu includes classic Indonesian fried rice with toasted cashew nuts, seared tuna, frittata with shallots, bell peppers, and cheese, and a fresh salad with cucumber, tomato, and pineapple, spiked with caraway seeds and balsamic vinegar. This is of course accompanied by a traditional and fiery Indonesian chili sauce.
A variety of dishes are on offer for the evening meal. A typical first course features laksa, a scrumptious Malaysian coconut curry with rice vermicelli noodles and kaffir lime leaves. This may be followed by crispy spring rolls, chicken satay accompanied by spicy Thai peanut dipping sauce, grilled fish, and tempeh fried with peanuts and sweet potato. Snacks and drinks are available throughout the day. We can easily accommodate different dietary needs and restrictions - just let us know well in advance so we can prepare. Please note that out of respect for our Muslim hosts, we do not serve pork.

Click here for a complete list of nationalities granted a Visa on Arrival
A a warm pullover or jacket. Evenings can be brisk.
Hat and sunglasses, insect repellant, light coloured clothing. For some reason, light colours are generally less appealing to mosquitos than dark ones.
Bring any toiletries you may need such as sunscreen, razors, tampons, toothpaste, medications, etc.
Your favourite tipple. It's very difficult (and very expensive) to get alcohol in Sorong. We encourage you to bring your favorite bottle of wine or spirits from the Duty Free shop in your home country (the Duty Free shop in the Jakarta airport is not very well stocked)
Natural, biodegradable soaps and shampoos. Our waste water treatment system relies on plant life to remove nitrogen, phosphates, and bacteria from grey water. Using harsh detergents may harm our plants, reducing the efficacy of our filtration system.

What should I not bring with me?
Please plan carefully to minimise your rubbish. When possible, choose rechargeable batteries and avoid bringing things like disposable razors, excessive plastic bags, plastic water bottles, etc. Any non-biodegradable and non-recyclable rubbish will have to be returned to Sorong. We are operating in a pristine environment, and we'd like to keep it that way.
Anti-bacterial soap. This will harm our waste-water gardens
Dive gloves. You will not be permitted to wear them.
Fishing/spearfishing equipment

When is the best time of year for diving?
The weather is rough in July, August and September. That's when we close for maintenance. Aside from this yearly occurence, diving in Raja Ampat is not particularly seasonal. October and November bring schools of bait fish, which attract bigger fish and Mobula rays. The south winds in May and June bring more sharks and pelagics.

How many divers per guide?
Maximum six, but four is more likely.

How many dives can I do per day?
There will be three scheduled boat dives per day, and night dives are generally scheduled every other night. Depending upon the dive package you choose, you may also do House Reef dives and night dives.

Can I do deco diving?
No. Because of our remote location we dive very conservatively. We do not allow deco diving, and the maximum depth is 30 metres. We do not allow solo diving.

Is nitrox available? Yes.

What can I do at Misool Eco Resort if I don't dive?
There's plenty of fantastic snorkelling around Misool Eco Resort. We also can arrange visits to a nearby ancient rock paintings, lagoon tours, river excursions, and bird-watching tours. We can also organise visits to the local village. Otherwise, it's lovely just to lounge in a hammock and enjoy the balmy tropical breezes...

Meals are served in our beach-front restaurant. Our internationally-trained chef has designed a tasty, nutritious, and whenever possible, organic menu for your enjoyment. We serve both Western and Asian food. Meals are generally are served buffet-style. There will also be afternoon snacks available for tasty surface intervals. In the event of a dive emergency, your dive insurance provider will advise us on the appropriate course of action. You must have health insurance as well as dive insurance if you plan on diving. We recommend DAN or PADI insurance which covers emergency evacuation.

Absolutely. We recommend that you always sleep under a mosquito net, wear light-coloured clothing, cover up during evening and early morning hours and use a repellent if you need to. As for malarial prophylactics, we suggest you consult with your doctor

Why do you call yourself an 'eco-resort?'
Misool Eco Resort is deeply committed to a policy of environmental and social responsibility. We seek to provide exceptional and enriching experiences in a sustainable environment. We aim to protect and revitalize both our natural surroundings and the community in which we operate. We are committed to demonstrating to our hosts, our guests, and the local government that tourism can support a local economy with much more favourable terms than mining, logging, overfishing, or shark finning.

Visa
To enter Indonesia, you are required to possess a passport valid for at least six months from the date of arrival and have proof of return or onward ticketing.
Most tourists can obtain a Visa on Arrival (VOA), costs are US$25 for a 30 day stay, or US$10 for a 7 day stay. For some countries there is an additional visa fee of US$50. Payment is by cash at the immigration desk upon arrival at the International Bali or Jakarta airport. For some countries this visa-on-arrival does not apply, and people need to apply for a tourist visa in their country of origin before traveling. We highly recommend that you contact your local Indonesian Consulate or Embassy to check requirements for travelers of your nationality and/or passport that you will be traveling on.

Vaccinations
Please get advice from your local medical center. For some parts of Indonesia malaria prophylactics are recommended as well as booster injections for intestinal diseases and hepatitis A and B. While at the Misool Eco resort, we ensure you will run no risk of "traveler's diseases" as the food is prepared with a high degree of hygiene and all the drinking water comes from bottles. Please ensure your medical insurance covers your vacation.

Currency, Cards, Cash
The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). Most hotels and restaurants in Bali accept credit cards, but it's always helpful to have some local currency to hand. On Bali there are plenty of ATM cash machines that service most foreign bank cards, most common are those servicing cards with the Cirrus and Maestro logos.

Although your visit will be fully-paid before you arrive at the Misool Eco resort, you may have some additional expenses, which can be settled at the end of your trip, such as bar bill, massage, laundry, rental gear, NITROX, on-board shop etc. As well as Rupiah or US Dollar cash, the resort also accepts VISA, MASTERCARD & Traveller's Cheques in the office in Sorong. There is a 2% surcharge when paying by credit card.

You will need Indonesian Rupiah should you wish to purchase local handicrafts when visiting villages or markets during the trip. When leaving Indonesia the international departure tax is Rp 150,000 (about US$17) per person at Ngurah Rai Airport in Denpasar. This can only be paid at the airport in local currency.

It is highly appreciated if you choose to tip the resort staff. You are free to determine the amount.

Domestic Flights
All of our itineraries require a domestic flight to reach the Sorong, the port of embarkation. It is not uncommon in Indonesia for domestic flights to be delayed, rescheduled or cancelled altogether! For this reason, we always recommend that you overnight in Bali, Jakarta, or wherever you enter or leave from Indonesia, before taking your onward flight & do not try to catch an international flight the same day as leaving the Misool Eco resort.

Domestic airlines typically impose a strict weight restriction of 20kg per person for checked luggage & 5-7kg for carry-on luggage. Excess luggage is charged per kilo and is payable in Rupiah cash at the airport. Please note that excess luggage is not guaranteed to arrive at the same time as the passenger!

Departure tax for domestic flights is payable in Rupiah cash at the airport (Rp 30,000/person).

Alcoholic Beverages
The Misool Eco resort bar has a wide selection of wines and spirits. If you like to bring your own, please discuss that during booking. Note that Indonesian Customs Department allows for 1 liter of liquor and 200 cigarettes to be brought in duty-free per person.

Voltage
Voltage in Indonesia and on the boat is 220 volts. Sockets take plugs of the 2 round pin type. The resort has a few adaptors to change the power from 220 volts to 110 volts, the standard in America but it is highly recommended you bring your own just in case they are all in use.

Insurance
It is recommended to arrange a Cancellation Insurance policy with your travel agent for your flights and to have good medical insurance, a baggage loss or damage insurance or combined travel insurance. Please check the terms and conditions of your booking with respect to cancellation of the trip with Misool Eco resort.
All guests who are planning to dive with Misool Eco resort are required to carry valid dive accident insurance, such as that provided by DAN (in USA), DAN Europe (in Europe), DAN Asia-Pacific (in Asia Pacific).

Special Needs
If you have special needs for meals, equipment (fishing gear etc) or sleeping arrangements (baby cot) please enquire with us prior to departure. Almost anything is possible! As parents ourselves, we understand what it takes to ensure an enjoyable trip for all members of your group, big and small.
